About the college

Located on Carillon Avenue, Newtown, within the University of Sydney, The Women’s College opened in 1892 as the first university college for women in Australia and moved to its current location in 1894. The College comprises a collection of buildings constructed between 1892 and 1996. Set within landscaped gardens, it is a significant landmark in the University grounds.

The original three-storey main building was designed to accommodate twenty-six students. Today the College has five residential wings and is a vibrant home to a diverse student body of 280 women.

The College is a safe and secure environment and truly a home away from home. Its location on campus enables students to maximise their university experience.

Newtown’s trendy King Street is a short walk away. A little further is the large Broadway Shopping Centre, and the adjacent suburb of Glebe, with yet more cafés and restaurants, excellent Saturday markets, celebrated bookshops, and unbeatable local colour. Sydney city centre is 10-15 minutes by frequent public transport.
