Netball 2010

Congratulations to our netball team who had a great performance at the intercol Netball competition.

Women’s came in tied 3rd place this year after some fantastic play as well unfortunate circumstances. Our star centre court player Emma Marino suffered an injury in the first quarter, of the first game, against the almighty Drews (hiss). She told the coach “It hurts a bit” and then promptly walked off the court with every intention to come back on later. She didn’t play that game, nor any of the others, as she had torn her ACL! Emma, you are one tough cookie!

The supporters were fantastic for the first two games, but sadly started to dwindle for the last few matches. This made some of the games a little more “interesting” with the verbal contributions from Johns and Wesley supporters being ferociously responded to by Sherro.....she also tackled the gorilla mascot from Johns(?) ripped its head off and threw it over the fence. We all applauded Sherro. However when she showed little too much enthusiasm (the opposition labelled it aggression) a video camera appeared and there was less applause and a little more nervousness. We had an amazing coach for the team this year (Emma Debney) who was an invaluable asset. With her experience and commitment we grew as a team and always had a gold star drawn on our hands before the sound of the first whistle to remind us that we were “stars” no matter what happened.

We also invested in 11 bodysuits for the team rather than the polo/skirt mis-matched combo of the previous few years. The bodysuits looked fantastic and helped with the overall morale of the team...because we all know that when you look good, you feel good.

Roocourt occurred in the senior common room and all the players who weren’t in the 2009 team (fresh and sophs/seniors) were made to put burger rings on each finger, eat more burger rings with chopsticks, drink a cup of white cask wine (aka goon) and then a shot of vodka..... India Edwards was fResher sacrifice, Emma Marino (tough cookie) joined in everything but the crazy dancing, Claire Deegan was in charge of keeping everyone’s cup full and was nicknamed “Dyke”... (I don’t think any of us actually know why or how that came to be her nickname) and Georgie Tout was inseparable from a cushion which accompanied us all to the Salisbury and beyond. Overall, it was a good competition with the team improving greatly and it was a fantastic way for the year groups to mingle. Sadly our training efforts were not reflected in the games but this can be partly blamed on having to play three games, three nights in a row (which was exhausting due to the lack of recovery time), losing a key player in the first match and having our esteem bruised by playing Drews first. Even so all the girls although disappointed, enjoyed themselves, and are looking forward to next year’s Rosebowl Netball competition.

Well Done Girls! [Kathy Aplin, Emma Byrne, Clare Deegan, Sam Dunlop, India Edwards, Emma Marino, Karen Muller, Lucy Rayner, Ashleigh Sheridan, Sarah Sweeney, Georgie Tout]

INTERCOL ROWING 2010

After many early 5am starts, the incredible Women's rowing team for 2010 met up with painted nails for a carbo-loaded breaky before embarking on our road trip to Penrith.

After being "warmly" welcomed by the pained boat minders of Johns and Wesley, we prepared the boat for racing. Dressed in our blue and white, wearing our 'attractive' zooties and oarsome Women's visors, we sat down to talk tactics with our coach, Will Townsend.

The race plan - "Get to the front and stay there!"

A daunting task to say the least! However, there was an air of excitement, cheers of encouragement as well as a sea of blue and white, as the Fresher crew pushed off the pontoon to race! And...What an exciting race it was! Sancta came out in front, but the perseverance and skill of the Women’s Fresh ‘mowed’ them down, and chased Drew’s “wonder” crew (that consisted of junior World Champions) – right to the finish! The Fresh’s valiant effort resulted in second place!!!!

Next...the seniors were up!

Following from the high standard and excitement from the Freshers results, the senior team hit the water completely focused and ready to give it their best shot! The start was quick with Drew’s pushing their boat to the lead; but a strong committed push from Women's saw the two crews equal at the half way mark! The battle was ON!

Both crews gave it everything! You could hear Rosie and all the other crews’ coxes driving their crews as well as the women’s cheer squad encouraging us from the bank! Drew’s nudged out in front, following by Wesley who came out of nowhere! After an extremely tough race right up until the finish line; the final result saw Drew’s cross the finish line in first place, followed by Wesley in second place with Women's coming a close third!

Everyone put in a great team effort on the day and gave it their best shot for Women’s and the start of our Rosebowl campaign!!! Thank you to all the supporters – you were incredible!!

It was a terrific effort by all, placing Women's second on the Rosebowl ladder - A great start to our Rosebowl Campaign!!

Grace and Jo
