Charity Committee

1st Semester Report

Semester One 2010 saw several charity initiatives take place at The Womens College. Firstly, the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital was chosen as the College’s annual fundraising incentive with Therese Rein coming to speak at Formal Dinner in May to outline the aims of this charity. Ms Rein gave an engaging address, and spurred interest in future charity work. In addition, about fifteen girls participated in the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, raising upwards of $400. Furthermore, the Womens College contributed to Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, holding a Morning Tea in Menzies Common Room on the 26th of May and raising approximately $150 for the Cancer Council. Finally, Charity Convenors were also active in the earlier part of the year, encouraging girls to donate blood at the Annual Red Cross Blood Drive. Second Semester aims mainly involve raising both funds and awareness for the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia.

Buddy Program

BUDDY SUCCESS!

The first buddy event was held on Tuesday 20th April with great success. Lots of excited budding buddies gathered in Menzies to meet up with their fellow Wizzies for some after dinner drinks and great chat. Comments like 'this was so much fun' and 'I love my buddy' were some of the positive responses heard amongst the babble. Following this sensation, the next buddy event will be held on Thursday 13th May and promises to bring as much fun and quality banter, so get excited.

BAM...Buddies are back!!

The coolest buddies turned up to play some good old fashioned (and some hip modern) board games on 13th May. Heaps of yummy lollies, chips, chocolate and cordial were enjoyed by all and the event was 'heaps of fun' (excited board game playing buddy). Buddies got treated to even more yummy food and quality chat at the buddy breakfast held on 31st May. With croissants, warm muffins and the lovely brisk cold morning air, the event was made unforgettable! Make sure you get involved in all the buddy events coming up in semester 2, including some silly silly silly season buddy fun!

Food Committee

Fourth Meeting - 06/08/10

On Friday the 6th of August the food committee met for our first meeting of the semester. Firstly we discussed the responses to the vegetarian survey. One major issue arising from the survey was a desire to have rennet free cheese. June said that of the 50 cheeses she has access to all of them contain rennet. It should be noted that June is willing to implement the dishes recommended in the survey and would like to know the particular method of cooking them. Free range eggs have continued to be a major point of conversation. Dr Williamson has explained she will make a decision based on the cost and a survey. A survey is currently being put together and will be circulated ASAP. The major reason for not implementing free range eggs is that they cost approximately 3 times as much as caged eggs and Women’s would have to reduce egg consumption by two-thirds to meet these costs. If there are any girls on a gluten free diet we would love to hear any recommendations you may have. Future events:

  • 20th August – Greek night
  • 29th August – Sundae Sunday
  • 17th September – Indian
  • 10th October – American Brunch

Third Meeting - 26/05/10

The latest Food Committee meeting was held on the Wednesday the 26th May It was decided that the 'Fortnightly vego gig' would be happening every second Friday and will be alternating between lunch and dinner. Our first one will be held this Friday the 4th of June.

On the 14th of June we are planning a 'Comfort Foods' Dinner. The plan is to have something similar to a home cooked meal like mum would make before our exams. Expect some yummy apple crumble and lasagne.

We would like to let the Cumbo girls know that they can fill a lunch box with any type of food at any time of the day - doesn't just have to be at breakfast

The next upcoming events will be:

  • Sundae Sunday - 1st of August, 26th of September and 7th November
  • Vietnamese Night - Friday the 30th July

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th August

Second Meeting - 28/04/10

Our meeting began by discussing the possibility of using a company such as Oz Harvest to deliver leftover food to homeless people/ people in need. The response was that college monitors how much waste we have and will always try and make sure that nothing goes to waste, eg by putting leftovers in the salad bar the next day. It was concluded that Oz harvest wouldn't really be feasible in our situation.

We then discussed adding more variety to the salad bar. Suggestions were made to add cold chicken for lunch, this led to the idea of having a sandwich of the week option. We decided Wednesday lunch would be the best time to try this out. Food committee would then make a poster to advertise our chosen sandwich of the week on top of the salad bar. We would reference last year's survey in order to choose an appropriate sandwich. We discussed the vegetarian food survey and what would be the predicted outcome of it. Things we thought would be an issue were nuts which are too expensive and we can't cater for everyone to have them.

Vegetarian Night, the suggestion put forward by environmental committee to have fortnightly vegetarian only meals was discussed. Health week also suggested combining with food committee to do something similar; however we had reservations about whether it would be healthy to promote not eating meat. Also there was the problem of not catering for everyone's diets. We also had to consider the consequences of doing something that could be unpopular with the majority of college.

We decided that the solution to this would be to trial a vegetarian only night and that environmental committee would conduct a poll to gauge people's responses. We set the date for vegetarian night on the 7/5/10.

We set the date for a burger and pizza night on the 21/5/10. We also discussed the idea of having an American brunch something we had talked about in our last meeting. The brunch would feature doughnuts, pancakes and bagels. We set the date for the brunch on the 9/5/10. We then came up with the idea of having a Sunday night Sundae making themed dinner which we decided to leave for next semester.

We set our next meeting for the 26/5/10 at 1.00pm.

First Meeting - 24/03/10

On the Wednesday the 24th of March 2010, we met with Tiffany, June and Dr Bob for our first meeting of the year.

Dr Bob informed us that he was in charge of purchasing wine for the college and if we wanted to have any input on wine selection we are more than welcome to do so. So if anyone has any ideas we would love to hear them. We would also now like to put forward a motion to be called the 'Food and Wine Committee'. We then discussed some different options and ideas for 'changing things up'. Tiffany suggested we form an online recipes collection or start a cook book fundraiser. Belinda suggested we try having afternoon tea like in stuvac but we decided this was not a necessity. June then informed us that we now would be having a hot breakfast on Thursday mornings and that waffles would most likely be moved to Tuesdays.

We then considered the idea of trialling lunches where only sandwich/salad foods would be available. By not having a cooked lunch we would be able to use the money we saved to have a more 'fancy' dinner or lunch the next day. We then talked about themed meals and currently planning a French Themed Lunch as well as an 'Aussie' BBQ Brunch to be held on ANZAC day. We are also planning to liaise with our vegetarians here at Women's so we can better shape meals to suit your needs. So everyone should be ready for a survey under the door.

June commented that everyone is welcome to talk to her if they have any specific issues with meals.
