Katharine and Thyne Reid Scholarship
Profile: Hannah Wurf

I’m a first year undergraduate at The University of Sydney although I am originally from Wagga Wagga in rural NSW. Although I lived overseas for several years, from year 10 until the end of school I attended The Riverina Anglican College in Wagga Wagga. After finishing school, I wanted to study International Studies at Sydney University. The degree offered a selection of subjects in politics and economics as well as electives in the Arts faculty. I therefore had the chance to continue with French as a language. I’m unsure what career path this will lead me to but I have interests in working overseas in foreign affairs and aspirations to work in the diplomatic sector.
It would have been impossible for me to study such a degree in the country so I chose to move to Sydney and live at The Women’s College. The College has provided a safe and comfortable environment located right on campus. It also has given me many social and academic opportunities with a range of inter-college activities arranged and tutorials held at college. I received the $6000 Katherine and Thyne Reid Scholarship which helps pay my college fees and gives me a greater sense of financial independence. I would encourage all rural students thinking of studying at Sydney University to consider The Women’s College as a place of accommodation and the chance to meet a diverse range of talented young women.

I finished year 12 at Canberra Girls Grammar School in 2005. My family lives in Canberra, so when I decided to study Arts/Law at Sydney University after my gap year, I needed to find a new place to live! The Katharine and Thyne Reid scholarship has made it possible for me to live at the Women's College without placing a heavy financial burden on my parents. It has been a wonderful opportunity to make friends and feel part of a community
