Information for Postgraduates

Postgraduate residents enjoy the benefits of an independent lifestyle with all the support that a large residential College can provide. While they carry out intensive thesis research or higher degrees by coursework, postgraduates can take advantage of living on the University campus within a lively community of scholars.

Applications are welcomed from postgraduates who wish to reside in College and contribute to the life of the College community. Applicants are selected on the basis of academic merit and need and a faculty balance is maintained amongst all residents to enhance the College community.

Conditions of Residence

Postgraduate residents are expected to participate in the life of the College to the extent that their own studies allow. This includes attendance at events such as The Chancellor's Dinner, Formal Dinners, special Postgraduate Dinners, Musicals, Plays etc.

Postgraduate residents must be enrolled in higher degrees, graduate courses or be undertaking other postgraduate work at the University of Sydney. They are expected to be of high academic standard and be interested in assisting undergraduates and contributing to the College community. All residents are required to attend Formal Dinner in academic gown on Monday evenings in the Dining Hall at 6.15pm. Places in College are offered on an annual basis, renewable at the discretion of the Principal.

Rooms

The College usually has 30 rooms reserved for women enrolled in full-time postgraduate degrees at the University of Sydney. Postgraduates are located in a variety of rooms around College. All rooms are offered with full board accommodation. The Principal allocates all postgraduate rooms.

Accommodation includes basic furniture – bed, desk, wardrobe, bookshelves, study chair, easy chair, desk lamp and heater. Some rooms contain kitchenettes with a fridge, toaster, electric fry pan, electric jug and microwave oven. Furniture is inventoried to each room and must not be moved without permission. Each resident has her own telephone and data access point. A weekly linen change is provided and communal laundries (with coin-operated machines), drying rooms and ironing facilities are available throughout the College. Residents must provide their own blankets, pillowcases, towels, cutlery, crockery and kitchen utensils. The College Resource Centre (library and computer rooms) and Music Rooms are also available for use by postgraduates.

Work Opportunities

There are several opportunities for postgraduate paid employment in College, as College Tutors, Resident Assistants, and Computer Officers. These provide postgraduates with financial assistance as well as the opportunity to contribute to the life of the College and to share their skills and interests with undergraduates. First preference is given to the needs of postgraduates currently in residence.

Postgraduate Fees

The College endeavours to provide inexpensive and convenient accommodation. In 2008 fees are $386 per week for full board (three meals per day). There is usually a small increase in fees each year.

Period of Occupancy

Postgraduate students are contracted to reside in the College for the academic year, i.e. thirty-four weeks.
