Indigenous Scholarships

Profile: Sarah-Jane Goodwin

I am originally from a small semi-rural town called Llandilo in Sydney’s inner west. I went to a local public high school for my entire secondary education. I am an Indigenous woman from the Wirradjuri tribe, and I am extremely proud of my heritage.

Since I was very young I have had a strong love for horses, and I became serious about Dressage around age 12. With the my black pony Anakie I have won multiple titles, including Champion & Reserve Champion Adult Dressage Exhibit at the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Sydney Royal Easter Show. I also won the Young Rider Scholarship at the National Young Rider Championships in 2005.

Because of my strong passion and involvement in the equestrian field, I knew I wanted to work with horses, and after completing work experience in year 9 at school, I decided I wanted to become a Veterinarian. I worked hard in school and specifically chose my subjects recommended for Vet Science. However in 2005, I was involved in a serious car accident just before my HSC, and because of my injuries I thought all hope was lost of me gaining entry into Veterinary Science at Sydney University. Fortunately the Koori Centre supported my application, and I gained entry into Veterinary Science at Sydney through the Cadigal Program.

However, the financial constraints of accommodation and living costs looked like they might determine if I could even attend Sydney University. Luckily I was offered a place to stay at the Women’s College, and received an Indigenous Scholarship. Without this scholarship, I simply would not be able to attend University. I am now in my 3rd Year of Veterinary Science and College and enjoying it immensely. College life is an enriching experience and has made University a home away from home where I believe I have met life long friends.

After graduation I would like to travel to America to complete a Residency and Internship in Equine Surgery. My ultimate goal is to become an Equine Surgeon, but I am also interested in Reproduction and one day managing my own Stud. Of course, if all else fails, I would love to return to full time competition and represent Australia in the Olympics!
