Alumnae Scholarships

Profile: Amelia Walkley

I am in my third year of a Bachelor of Arts (Languages) degree at the University of Sydney, in which I am majoring in French and Linguistics. While my home town in the Blue Mountains is only around an hour from university by train, I decided to apply to live at The Women's College because the travel hindered my ability to immerse myself within the amazing student lifestyle offered by the University of Sydney. I had always juggled my schoolwork with extra-curricular activities during high school, and I wanted my university experience to be no different.

I am the fortunate recipient of one of the College’s Alumnae scholarships, which are awarded to students whose mothers were past residents of the College. Not only my mother, but all three of her sisters lived here whilst completing their university studies. It is lovely to hear their stories of the way college life used to be, and to talk about how much the College has changed and grown over time.

With the help of the Alumnae scholarship, which provides $2000 for one year in college fees, I was able to live at the College, which in turn opened up many doors. During my two years at university, I have been a councillor on the Students’ Representative Council, edited Honi Soit and been involved in numerous clubs, societies and campaigns, all the while maintaining a high academic standard within my university studies. I believe that I would not have been able to achieve this level of involvement within the student community had I continued to live at home. The college provides a vibrant living environment, with great support networks in all spheres of academia, and I absolutely love it here.
